On Sunday, February 9, the morning worship service will center around a dramatic reading of selections from James Weldon Johnson’s poetical work God’s Trombones. First published in 1927, the work was written to recognize the importance of itinerant African-American preachers during the time of slavery and to honor the beauty and power of the language they used to tell Bible stories and inspire hope. A group of Watts Street members will read three of the seven “sermons” from the work: “The Creation”; “Go Down, Death” (a funeral oration); and “Judgment Day.” The Chancel Choir will accompany the readings with spirituals. Thanks to Daryll Powell for coordinating.
