MLK Weekend Events

January 2, 2026

We look forward to once again honoring Dr. King’s life and prophetic vision and actions and we hope you will plan to join us for these special community events!

MLK Weekend Service Project
Saturday, January 17
9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Catawba Trail Farm (2080 Sawmill Creek Pkwy)

Members of Watts Street Baptist Church and St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church are invited to join together to volunteer and learn about the amazing mission of Catawba Trail Farm. We look forward to building relationships as we work together before we worship together on MLK Sunday. Be sure to dress warmly! All ages are welcome. Please RSVP to kelly@wattsstreet.org by Monday, January 12.

MLK Sunday at Watts Street!
Sunday, January 18
11 a.m. in the WSBC Sanctuary

We are honored to welcome our guest proclaimer, the Rev. Barbara Lavarin, BWIM Director of Supporting Women in Ministry.  We will be joined in worship by the congregation of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church and community leaders from Durham. We invite all Watts Street members and friends to help us extend warm hospitality to our guests on this special day.

The January Minute for Mission on MLK Sunday will support the Walltown Food Pantry. Checks should be made out to WSBC with “Walltown Food Pantry” noted in the memo line or consider the text giving or QR code options.

MLK Sunday Lunch and Discussion
Sunday, January 18
12 p.m. in the WSBC Fellowship Hall

After worship, all are invited to the fellowship hall for a catered lunch, table talk discussion, and a Q and A session with Rev. Lavarin.  Lunch reservations can be made using the REALM app or by contacting the church office (919-688-1366 or office@wattsstreet.org) by Thursday, January 15. When you make your reservation, please indicate your preference: baked chicken entrée, vegetable plate, or attending the session but not eating.  If you prefer to stay masked during the session but you would still like the meal, we will have take-out trays available.
