On a night when we celebrate the Magi bringing gifts to the refugee Jesus, the Watts Street youth are sponsoring an intergenerational service project to assemble Welcome Kits for Refugees through the Durham office of Church World Service. The congregation is invited to bring the following linens or hygiene items to Kelly’s office on or before Wednesday, January 6: twin, full or queen sheet sets in good condition (no king), bath towels, hand towels, washcloths, blankets/comforters/ quilts, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and shampoo. After church supper on January 6, we’ll assemble our kits and also learn more about the Syrian refugee crisis, the struggle of refugees worldwide, and opportunities for people of faith to “welcome the stranger”. On the following Wednesday, January 13, Ellen Andrews, the director of CWS’s Durham Immigration & Refugee Program, will speak on how to get involved beyond simple donations.
