Observing Lent at WSBC
Posted on Tue Jan 26 2010

The season of Lent is a period of six weeks when we remember Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness, from which he emerged with a clear sense of identity and mission. Lent is a time to stay close to Jesus as we deepen our life of communion with God. We look for opportunities for silence as we stop our frenzied lives and turn to calm and stillness. Click on the red link above to read about special worship experiences during Lent.

This year, the Environmental Mission Group offers a Lenten devotional guide to Carbon Fasting.  To participate in a forum about the Lenten Carbon Fast, click here:  http://www.wattsstreet.org/mod/group/view.php?group_id=11

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 17, with 6:30 p.m. worship in the sanctuary, including the imposition of ashes, a reminder of our mortality. The 6:30 time encourages families with school-age children to participate. Childcare for preschoolers is provided.

February 21 is the first Sunday in Lent. In worship the color changes to purple and we bring in the cross instead of the Christ candle. This year we also use the candles of the Advent wreath, gradually extinguishing the light. We refrain from singing our alleluias, and reserve that praise for Easter Sunday.

On March 6 we offer “Silence and Stillness: A Lenten Meditation Retreat,” from 9:30 to 1:00, led by Mel Williams.  (NOTE: This event has been postponed.  Stay tuned for new date!)

Holy Week concludes the season, starting with Palm/Passion Sunday on March 28, and moving to Maundy Thursday when we gather at 7:30 p.m. for communion. The solemn service of Tenebrae is on Friday at 7:30 p.m. when we remember the crucifixion by leaving the church in darkness and silence.

Easter Sunday, April 4, at 11 a.m. we celebrate the joy of the Resurrection.
